Core Stability

A man receiving physio therapy.

When you hear the phrase β€œcore stability,” what comes to mind?

Often, people associate the "core" with the abdomen, but this part of the body involves more than that. If you look at your core in front of the mirror, you'll notice that it's located at the center of the body. When you move your arms and legs during routine activities, the core must be stabilized.

What are the parts of the body included in the "core?"

They involve the muscles on the torso (or the muscles on the front, sides, and back of the body), the muscles on the shoulders, and the muscles on the hips. They bridge the upper and lower parts of the body.

Why Is Core Stability So Important?

The core is integral to body movements. It supports the spine and pelvis as force is moved from one area to another. A weak core can keep you from moving your legs and arms normally, while a strong core helps you maintain balance and protects you against injuries.

Core stability refers to your ability to keep your spine still while performing physical activities. It helps you control your body so it doesn't bend or twist all of a sudden. Additionally, it keeps your body stable, so you can move with ease.

It's a myth that core stability is only for athletes. It's for everyone. That's why it's important to keep core muscles strong so you can also ensure proper posture, balance, and smooth movements. You also reduce your risk of trips or falls.

The spine consists of bones stacked on each other. Between these bones are delicate, small discs surrounded by tissue. These parts are all stable and connected, thanks to cartilage, ligaments, and muscles.

Core muscles keep the body steady. They absorb ground impact on the body.

How Can We Improve Core Stability?

You can improve core stability by engaging in core exercises. And don't worry, your routine doesn't have to be hardcore or too intense. Instead of investing in large-motion movements, you can focus on functional exercises.

Here are examples of exercises you can practice to boost core strength:

  • Forward plank. Keep the body straight and prevent the hips from falling to the floor.
  • Weighted carries. Carry a weight while walking a specific distance.
  • Bridge exercise. Keep your back relaxed, not sticking to the floor, and your hips steady. Then, slowly lift your hips until they connect or form a downward plane between your knees and shoulders. Pause and stay in this position before gradually releasing your form.

Benefits of Core Stability Exercises

Core exercises do more than keep your core muscles toned and defined. They also allow you to perform physical activities more easily. You avoid feeling pain, tiredness, or discomfort immediately.

A weak core can lead to poor posture and a body that is prone to injuries and back pain. Core exercises can also help you reach your health and fitness goals faster.

Be sure to consult with professionals when developing a well-rounded fitness program. Stay healthy as you age with a strong and stable core.

Dr. Nenshi has been invaluable during my pregnancy and postpartum journey, as well as treating my little baby girl. During pregnancy, she was able to help with low back and pelvis/hip pain, which significantly improved my quality of life during those last months. Postpartum she has been incredibly helpful with the aches and pains I have had due to breastfeeding, as well as improving the actual process of breastfeeding by waking up my nervous system. In regards to my newborn, she was able to help with some serious gas and digestion problems - which improved her mood and sleep tremendously! While treating her for those pesky tummy problems, she also noticed that she was favouring turning her neck to the left side and struggling with turning to the right. She was able to fix that as well, before it turned into more serious problems. Overall, I highly recommend Dr. Nenshi for almost all pains during your prenatal, postnatal and newborn journey :). She gives great care to her patients (young and old), and can usually see you with short notice. She is now seeing multiple members of my family.

My lovely bride of 36 years developed painful sciatic, hip, and foot pain that eventually became almost debilitating to her. 3 months with Dr. Nenshi ( 4-5 visits?) and she is now pain free. We are so grateful to her, it’s been a quality of life miracle.

I just want to mention how wonderful Dr. Nenshi is! She is more than just a chiropractor. Her neurological knowledge is exceptional! She was so thorough in her assessment during our first meeting that it took a couple of hours. Her caring, commitment and compassion goes beyond the normal standard of care. She truly wants to help get you better and she won't give up! I can't say enough good things about Dr. Nenshi and I would be remiss if I didn't mention her amazing assistant Rachelle, who is just awesome as well! Ryan

We met Dr.Nenshi first time on November 17, 2020. It was in regards to our son's concussion. She truly knows magic. The way she helped our son to go one step at a time patiently and took true care of him it was amazing. Best part was she always had some solution for his problem. It was a long process and she held our hand to go through that rough phase. Not only concussion, she treated my son later for his partial ligament tear and some neck and shoulder pain too. She is amazing and she will never give up. Thank you so much Dr.Nenshi for giving us back our son as he was before the injury. Anwit loves you and depends on you. We truly appreciate her professionalism with personal touch.
