Custom Orthotics and Footwear

Custom orthotics and footwear are custom devices made for a specific user. If you're interested in a pair of prescription orthotics, that means you will need to undergo a comprehensive evaluation. Your new pair of shoes will be designed according to your specific needs.

Unlike regular footwear, where only the length and width of your feet are necessary, in custom orthotics, you will have your feet, ankles, and legs assessed. Your unique foot structure is examined.

Two Types of Custom Orthotics

You'll likely come across two types of custom orthotics: functional orthotics and accommodative orthotics.

  1. Functional orthotics, also referred to as β€œrigid orthotics,” are designed to cater to those with irregular foot functions. You may benefit from functional orthotics if you feel that your feet aren't working or moving as they normally should and you always experience pain that reaches your legs and thighs. Hence, these types of custom orthotics can be used to treat foot injuries. They can be worn as dress shoes or walking shoes. They can even be designed to come with low heels. Often, they're made of semi-rigid materials like carbon fiber, plastic, or graphite.
  2. Accommodative or soft orthotics, meanwhile, are used to offer cushioning and relief to uncomfortable areas in the feet. If you have calluses or foot ulcers, your podiatrist may recommend these types of footwear. They tend to be bulky, however, so they're often used with functional orthotics. If you’re active in sports, you may also have soft orthotics customized for your gear.

What's the Difference Between Custom Footwear and Shoe Inserts?

Podiatrists, or foot and lower leg health specialists, recommend the use of orthotics to address foot problems, such as heel pain. These custom footwear types ease the discomfort in your feet and improve their movements.

Prescription footwear naturally costs more than shoe inserts because they're specially crafted for the wearer. They're based on medical evaluations of the user's feet, so the extra cost is well worth it.

Shoe inserts, on the other hand, are mass-produced. They're available almost anywhere and don't offer the value that custom orthotics provide. They're made to be placed in your shoes to add height or serve as a cushion, but, in general, they're not capable of addressing foot-related medical conditions.

The only exception is if it was your doctor who recommended the use of shoe inserts. Then, in that case, they may be able to offer more value. Only prescription footwear can fix foot problems and treat chronic issues.

Do I Need Custom Orthotics, or Will Shoe Inserts Be Enough?

If you are not experiencing any issues with your feet, ankles, or lower leg areas, then it may be fine to start off with shoe inserts.

However, if you're noticing irregularities with your foot motion or have been in pain for a while now, it pays to see a podiatrist for a comprehensive evaluation. This way, they can check your feet, diagnose the issue, and identify potential causes. Expect to have your feet, walking, and running mechanisms assessed.

Your podiatrist will need to check how your feet function when performing routine activities. The data they gather will allow them to determine whether you need custom orthotics and footwear. During your consultation, you're also bound to receive professional advice on how you can improve your foot health.

Dr. Nenshi has been invaluable during my pregnancy and postpartum journey, as well as treating my little baby girl. During pregnancy, she was able to help with low back and pelvis/hip pain, which significantly improved my quality of life during those last months. Postpartum she has been incredibly helpful with the aches and pains I have had due to breastfeeding, as well as improving the actual process of breastfeeding by waking up my nervous system. In regards to my newborn, she was able to help with some serious gas and digestion problems - which improved her mood and sleep tremendously! While treating her for those pesky tummy problems, she also noticed that she was favouring turning her neck to the left side and struggling with turning to the right. She was able to fix that as well, before it turned into more serious problems. Overall, I highly recommend Dr. Nenshi for almost all pains during your prenatal, postnatal and newborn journey :). She gives great care to her patients (young and old), and can usually see you with short notice. She is now seeing multiple members of my family.

My lovely bride of 36 years developed painful sciatic, hip, and foot pain that eventually became almost debilitating to her. 3 months with Dr. Nenshi ( 4-5 visits?) and she is now pain free. We are so grateful to her, it’s been a quality of life miracle.

I just want to mention how wonderful Dr. Nenshi is! She is more than just a chiropractor. Her neurological knowledge is exceptional! She was so thorough in her assessment during our first meeting that it took a couple of hours. Her caring, commitment and compassion goes beyond the normal standard of care. She truly wants to help get you better and she won't give up! I can't say enough good things about Dr. Nenshi and I would be remiss if I didn't mention her amazing assistant Rachelle, who is just awesome as well! Ryan

We met Dr.Nenshi first time on November 17, 2020. It was in regards to our son's concussion. She truly knows magic. The way she helped our son to go one step at a time patiently and took true care of him it was amazing. Best part was she always had some solution for his problem. It was a long process and she held our hand to go through that rough phase. Not only concussion, she treated my son later for his partial ligament tear and some neck and shoulder pain too. She is amazing and she will never give up. Thank you so much Dr.Nenshi for giving us back our son as he was before the injury. Anwit loves you and depends on you. We truly appreciate her professionalism with personal touch.
